HOUSING AND RESIDENTIAL SERVICES: FACT SHEET
* 169 customers receive residential services from the Key Training Center.
* Our residential facilities are designed to serve a broad range of customer housing needs based on their condition and abilities.
* Based on availability of residential openings, consumers express preferences and make choices about where they live.
* We offer 4 types of housing options:
- Key Pine Village
- Group Homes
- Apartments
- Supported Living
* Our customers have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of social activities. There are parties, shopping outings, exercise programs, church/worship services, bowling, etc.
* A typical cost per day for residents range from approximately $20 to $164 and is determined by the resident’s level of need.
Group Homes
* Group homes provide a nurturing family style atmosphere staffed with a full-time Resident House Manager.
* A resident manager assumes day-to-day responsibilities for the home. The staff are on duty at all times while consumers are in the home and assists with the care, treatment, and goal attainment of consumers. Not only a friend, counselor and helper, the resident manager serves as an important advocate for each Key Center consumer
* 13 group homes: 6 group homes are located at the Key Center’s Lecanto campus with 7 others located in the surrounding areas in Inverness and Floral City. Off-campus group homes blend well within residential neighborhoods.
* Group homes range in size from 3 beds to 11 beds and together can accommodate up to 86 clients.
* All group homes are clean, nicely furnished and reflect a warm, family-style setting.
* Most meals for group home residents are prepared in the group home's kitchen by the staff.
* Residents must keep their rooms neat and may assist in light household duties.
* The group homes encourage family type activities, while catering to an individual’s particular needs.

A majority of homes were built with significant major gifts and other additional donor gifts.
*These homes were built using U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funding.
Specialized Group Home - Spooner Cottage
* Spooner Cottage is licensed as a long-term residential care facility providing 24-hour life sustaining care to eight multiply disabled and mostly non-ambulatory individuals.
* Spooner Cottage residents have limited mobility. Most of them use wheelchairs.
* Staff members assist residents with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing and eating. Home health care is provided to consumers with acute medical conditions.
* Spooner Cottage residents enjoy community life when they attend church, dine in restaurants, go to the movies, take vacations and participate in other social events.
Apartment Living
* We have four apartment complexes serving 25 clients.
* With support from Key Center transitional living coaches, clients enjoy enhanced freedom while maintaining a safety net for normal problems of everyday life.
* Transitional living coaches provide residents with training, encouragement and personal counseling about daily life. They help consumers learn to cook, budget finances, manage personal affairs and live both actively and productively in a community-based setting. Coaches remain on-call to provide assistance after normal duty hours.
* Residents live in modern one bedroom apartments in a complex with other Key Center residents.
* All apartments are within reasonable walking distance of the downtown business district.
* Residents exercise choice in decision making and navigate freely within the community limitations.
* All apartment complexes are integrated within the local neighborhood and do not stand out as being unusual or inappropriate.
* Rents are determined by a sliding scale based on income and ability to pay.
* For some consumers, the transitional living program serves as an important stepping stone for supported living.
* Funding for Key Manor and Key Vista Apartments was obtained from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 811 program.

Supported Independent Living
* 10 customers who rent non Key Center housing or live in homes they purchased comprise the Supported Living program.
* The Key Center provides Supported Living Coaches to help customers live independently, providing assistance as they need it.
* Supported living coaches provide residents with training, encouragement and personal counseling about daily life. They help consumers learn to cook, budget finances, manage personal affairs and live both actively and productively in a community-based setting.
* The State Housing Initiative Program (SHIP) provides subsidies for home construction to qualified consumers. Under the program a housing grant is treated as a deferred second mortgage while the balance of the construction loan is repaid by the consumer/home owner as a first mortgage. Five Key Center consumers have received SHIP housing grants.
Key Pine Village
* Key Pine Village is an intermediate care facility serving 48 clients with severe and profound mental retardation, many with secondary disabilities.
* Key Pine Village consists of six eight bedroom, family style homes, located on 13.3 acres.
* Residents enjoy private bedrooms and a semiprivate bath. Each 5,200 square-foot home features wall to wall carpeting, an emergency call system, fireplace, screened porch and oversized carport. Shared congregate areas include living room, dining room and kitchen. Residents receive three nutritionally balanced meals daily prepared by Key Pine’s dietary staff.
* Key Pine Village services are determined by a comprehensive habilitation plan developed for each resident. Key Pine Village staff, and professionals, are properly licensed, experienced and qualified to evaluate, monitor, counsel, habilitate, train and meet the consumer’s needs.
* Key Pine Village provides a full scope of services: room and board; psychological evaluation, monitoring, counseling and treatment; medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy care: habilitative training; behavioral training, speech, physical and occupational therapies; transportation and supervised leisure and recreational activities.
* Social, recreational and leisure activities are important elements for the residents of Key Pine Village.
* Key Pine Village was built in 1981 with funding from a HUD Section 202 loan. The mortgage is addressed through a Section 8 rent subsidy. Key Pine Village was the second intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded built with HUD funding in the United States.
* Historically, residents of Key Pine Village graduate to less restrictive settings in a Key Center Group homes.
