Supported Independent Living
Some Key Center clients live on their own in apartments they rent or homes they purchase. Supported living coaches help customers live independently providing assistance as they need it. Coaches provide residents with training, encouragement and personal counseling about daily life. They help consumers learn to cook, budget finances, manage personal affairs, and live both actively and productively in a community-based setting.
Many homeowners were able to build their own home through the State Housing Initiative Program (SHIP). Under the program a housing grant is treated as a deferred second mortgage while the balance of the construction loan is repaid by the consumer/home owner as a first mortgage. Five Key Center consumers have received SHIP housing grants.
